Barely Breathing: Annelie Pompe

Blog, Extreme

In this video Annelie Pompe summits Aconcagua, which at 22,837 feet is the highest mountain in South America. The Swedish adventurer has also enjoyed the thin, high-altitude air on top of Island peak (Nepal), Illimani (Bolivia), Cho Oyu (Tibet), Shishapangma (Tibet),  Lhotse (Nepal), Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), and the highest of them all, Mt. Everest.

But Pompe is not just a climber. She also deals with the lack of oxygen underneath the sea—an accomplished freediver, she holds a women's adventure, annelie pomp, freediverworld record 126-meter dive. Freedivers don’t use scuba equipment, they just take a deep breath and hurtle themselves into the depths of the ocean.

Pompe is also a motivational speaker and coach. She has a philosophical way of examining her exploits and life, noting after her summit of Aconcagua that there was “great happiness but also a great emptiness afterward.” I suppose every adventurer feels this same type of withdrawal after the rush, and that’s why we keep going. Says Pompe: “It’s not about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself.”
